屈斜路カルデラの外輪山にはいくつかの展望台が整備されており、様々な角度からカルデラを見下ろすことができます。日本最大のカルデラのため、全形を一か所から見ることは叶わないのですが、個々の展望台からはそれぞれ違った特徴ある地形を眺めることができます。その三か所目は屈斜路湖を広く見下ろすことができる美幌峠です。
Some observatories are located on mountain ranges of Kussharo caldera, looking down Lake Kussharo from different directions. We cannot see all scenery of caldera as it is the biggest in Japan from one observatory, but we can look at different characteristics of its landscape from different ones. Here is the third introduction of the observatories, Bihoro Pass.
■眼下に広がる屈斜路湖 Lake Kussharo
屈斜路カルデラの展望台の中でも藻琴山展望駐車公園に次ぐ標高525mの高さにあり、屈斜路湖の中心が眼下に広がるのが美幌峠展望台です。晴天時は湖の大部分を観望することができ、広い空と相まって壮大な景色を見せてくれます。湖の周囲は57キロもあり、周囲約35キロの山手線がすっぽりと収まってしまう大きさです。山手線を見下ろすことができる場所があったら、見える景色はすべてビル群ですが、美幌峠からは多少の人工物を除いてすべて自然風景です。比較してみると、湖の広さがどれ程のものかイメージできるのではないでしょうか。
Bihoro Pass observatory is located in the middle of Lake Kussharo and at the height of 525m which is the second lowest of the Kussharo caldera. We can see almost everywhere of the lake in fine day and fabulous scenery with very broad sky. Surrounding of the lake is 57km which is bigger than 35km Yamanote Line in Tokyo. If Yamanote Line can be looked down, only building may be seen in the scenery, but only nature except few artificial things is seen from Bihoro pass.
■屈斜路カルデラ外輪山 Kussharo caldera mountain ranges
美幌峠展望台は少しですが歩くことができるようになっていて、その最も高い場所に立つと、湖を取り囲んでいる屈斜路カルデラの外輪山を見渡すことができます。このサイズの外輪山を麓にした山がもともと目の前にそびえ立っていたわけですから、当時の噴火はきっと想像を絶する規模だったのではないかと想いを巡らすことができます。
You can do a very short walk at Bihoro pass. Short walk finds us views of Kussharo caldera mountain ranges surrounding Lake Kussharo once standing at the top of the observatory. As caldera is a landscape which used to be a part of volcano and Kussharo caldera is the biggest in Japan, you may imagine that the eruption of the volcano in the past must have been so huge.
■外輪山の影落ちる夕方 shadow of the caldera mountain ranges
時々、夕陽を見るなら美幌峠がいいんでしょ？という質問があります。確かに湖とは反対方向に夕陽が沈んでいく様子を見ることができるので、きれいではあります。しかし、湖と夕陽は絡まず、背後からの光によって自分が立っている外輪山の影が湖に落ちていきます。逆光にはなってしまいますが、特に冬なら、朝陽がカルデラの対岸から昇ってくるため、太陽と湖を見るならば早朝に訪れるほうがいいでしょう。
I have been asked if Bihoro pass is a good place to see the sunset. Sunset is in fact beautiful but the sun is going down to another side from Lake Kussharo. But, we can’t see the lake and the sunset together and the shadow of the caldera mountain ranges drops into the lake due to the light behind us. So, you may visit here in the early morning to see the sun and the lake together because the sun coming up from the other side of the caldera especially in Winter, although it will be a back-light facing the lake.
■雲海を見るなら春、秋、冬 sea of clouds in Spring, Autumn, Winter
屈斜路カルデラではどの展望台からでも雲海が見られる可能性があります。しかし、標高の低い美幌峠展望台では、真夏の標高の高い雲がカルデラを覆ってしまうと、雲海の中に沈んでしまうため、見られないことがほとんどです。その代わり、春や秋、冬には湖上や地面に這うような雲海が発生することが多いため、そのほかの展望台とは違い、標高の低さのお陰で、雲海の波打ち際にいるような感覚を得ることができます。
It is highly possible to observe sea of clouds at Kussharo caldera. But, as Bihoro pass is located at low altitude and summer sea of coulds covers caldera, you may not be able to see sea of clouds from Bihoro pass. You may find sea of clouds thinly occurs just on the land and the lake in Spring, Autumn and Winter, instead. So, you can feel like being at the beach of sea of clouds because of low altitude of Bihoro Pass.
■強風に煽られることの多い美幌峠 Strongly windy at Bihoro Pass
外輪山の中でも標高の低い美幌峠は北風だとオホーツクからの風が、南風だと太平洋からの風が周囲の外輪山から集約されて吹き抜けていくため、強風に煽られることが多くなります。夏の暑い日には爽やかに感じる風も、気温が低い時期では体感温度をより下げてしまうため、暖かい服装を準備することが必要になってきます。
Wind from South in Summer and North in Winter flows through low altitude Bihoro pass because it is surrounded by higher mountain ranges. As strong wind flows almost all the time visiting Bihoro Pass, you may feel cool in Summer, but freezing in winter. It is better idea to bring extra clothes when visiting Bihoro Pass.
